A four-season self-inflating sleeping pad, ideal for broader physiques

The Matrix 38 is a very lightweight, packable cold-weather sleeping pad thanks to the tapered leg area and perforations with vertical and horizontal cavities. Double perforations were only used in less exposed areas – i.e. under the legs and head, horizontal perforations are used in the body area, which has better insulating properties.
The nylon screw valve is designed so that you won’t lose the cap. Plus, when inflating, simply press and the valve closes, giving you plenty of time to screw it in. Matrix sleeping pads are wider and longer and thus more suitable for users with a larger physique. If you have an athletic or slim build, we recommend opting for the Peak 38, which has identical features but a smaller surface area and is therefore lighter and more packable.
To prevent air leaking through the pad’s top material, an impermeable membrane has been laminated to the polyester fabric. Laminating a continuous membrane instead of applying a coating eliminates the risk of uneven coating in areas where the material is uneven. This can lead to insufficient coating being applied and air leaking out in the affected areas. The use of PU foam with a thermally laminated membrane (TPU) is the highest quality combination of materials on the market today.
The core of every self-inflating sleeping pad is the inner foam. Pinguin sleeping pads are filled with Polyurethane foam, whose open pores retain air, thus giving it excellent insulating properties. The foam has a very good shape memory, which helps it inflate rapidly and means it does not sag even after years of frequent use.
We intentionally use Nylon valves on our sleeping pads. The reason for using them instead of brass valves is that they are 100% air-tight due to the material’s partial elasticity, their low weight and greater resistance to freezing. The nylon used on the valves is sufficiently strong and tough.
The combination of horizontal and vertical cavities makes the foam in the sleeping pad as light as possible. However, because this partially reduces the load capacity of the „double-perforated“ foam, we only use this combination in those zones that carry less load – i.e. in the head and leg area. In the most exposed zone (from the shoulders to the buttocks), this type of sleeping pad is only lightened by horizontal cavities, which also guarantees the best insulating properties. Sleeping pads with this type of construction are the lightest version suitable for four-season use.
